Ways to overcome writing burnout
Now, I can’t speak for all writers, but I know there are times when I go through writer’s burnout. It has nothing to do with writer’s block, I can think of a thousand things I could write, but I just don’t have the drive. I start to feel that my writings are boring and stale. I don’t feel as though I have anything interesting left to say, and then I start to doubt my abilities.
So, here are a few ways in which I get back into the swing of things. I’m not going to tell you that these will work for you, but they’ve helped me several times.
Play Word Games–I’m a word game junkie. Crossword games, search-a-word games, and even trivia games. They are all ways I still hang out with the written word, but in a new light. At times, a single word can change everything.
Reading Forum Discussions–This is one of my favorites. I like to go through some of the forums I’ve joined, and read the discussions. There have been several times when certain discussions will inspire me to write an article or blog post about the subject.
Stock Photo Sites–There’s just something about visual stimulation that gets my creative juices flowing. Sometimes, it’s from a picture that has pulled on my heart strings, while other times it’s a picture that made me laugh. Something goofy will pop into my head, and I’ll have to write it down.
Virtual Vacation–Did that one make you scratch your head? I like to take virtual vacations once in a while. A virtual vacation is simply taking your mind somewhere else for a little relaxation. The best part about a virtual vacation is that it’s not just a matter of where you want to go, but when you want to go. You can hang out with the gods and goddesses of Mt. Olympias, rock out on the moons of Saturn, or play at the bottom of the sea.
When you start to feel a little burned out with your writing, don’t let it get you down. Give your brain a little down time, and let your creativity stocks replenish. You never know when you’ll come across something that will send your writing in a whole new direction.

Great ideas here but whichever of the tips you use, you need to explore them with focus otherwise it’s easy to get caught up in looking at images, virtually packing a suitcase as you wonder what it costs to stay at a place or whatever. Remember to use the prompts as jump-off points for your writing, not as a way to procrastinate!
Absolutely. It’s not a way to keep from writing, it’s a way to keep the creative process moving.
Thanks KatieAnne, great point.
This is something we’ve all experience. Sometimes all you need is a little break.
These are some great tips, and I’m going to try using them the next time I feel unmotivated to write!
