Create a Writing List

Published by crsenter at 12:01 am under Tips for Creative Writers, Writing Ideas Edit This

There are days when even I run short of things to write about. One day I find myself filled with ideas, and the next, nothing. So, I came up with a little trick to help get a few ideas rolling around again. I create lists. Nothing in particular, just lists of things that cross my mind.

Other than writing, my other love is ancient history. So, I’ll sit down and start writing out lists of Great Ancient Battles, Greatest Queens of the Egyptians, Worst Villains of the Ancient World, etc. It may look like much, but I find a lot of ideas in these lists. Not only do I have a list of people, but each one is a potential article in themselves.

This can be used for whatever topic you want. You can use grocery lists, to-do lists, places you’d like to see, whatever you find interesting. If you’re into comic books, you might write a list of the top female characters, or coolest superhero weapons. If you’re into cooking, you could do a list of best one-pot meals or easiest family dinners. It’s all up to you.

As you write your list, take a mental note of each item on your list. How did that “thing” come to be? What other interesting facts can you find out about that “thing”? How did that “thing” originate? Sit down and ask yourself as many questions as you can about each item on your list. Depending on how many things you’ve put into your list, will depend on how many potential articles you have on your hands.

I’m always making lists of things. I used to have a small notebook with a list of possible plot ideas, but I can’t find it.

Here we have more common ground sweetie. I’m a history fanatic too - but 19th century women’s history is my particular passion! Good post.

    Thank you ladies.

@Gina–I have a ton of notebooks around me at all times, but I never think to take one with me when I’m on the run. I spend as much time writing things out in long hand as I do typing. LOL

@KatieAnne–I love all things ancient. My dream as a kid was to become an archaeologist, but wanting to be a writer won out. LOL
