Anyway, my SIL is a writer and has an interesting blog with writing exercises. I think you'd enjoy visiting her page.

@ Laurin--Used up is a good way of putting it. Whatever it takes to get back on track, is a good thing.

@ shinewriter--thanks hon.

@ AW--I've been there. One of those "on the tip of your tongue" type things. Now that's the truest sense of writer's block I've ever heard of. When the word is there but refuses to come out. That's writer's block.

There was this time...I was writing a technical article and I got stumped on a word. I *knew* there was a word that said exactly the right thing but I couldn't think of it. I looked through dictionaries, reference boo"s, I walked around the building asking everyone if they knew the "word" for what I was describing. Nothing. I went back to my office and sat there throwing spitballs at the ceiling for the rest of the day. I no longer remember what the word was but I must have gotten past the writer's block because I did finish the manual. But ever since then I've had the deepest sympathy for anyone dealing with writer's block!

I love your suggestions for overcoming writer's block. Sometimes I find I'm not so much blocked as used up. Taking a day off, endulging in a favorite movie, or taking an Artist's Date (a la Julia Cameron's advice) will frequently refill the creative well. Then I'm back at the writing until the well runs dry again.
